Advisers Give Back Get started — it’s free

Why Advisers Give Back exists.

Knowing the right thing to do with money isn’t the same as doing it. We built a way for volunteer advisers to help people take the next step.

We’re a nonprofit. Every adviser is a fiduciary, which means they must put your interests first.

Where we come from.

Our founder, Matt Iverson-Comelo, spent 14 years in financial technology and came away with one conviction: education alone doesn’t change what people do with money. With Professor Dan Ariely and the Common Cents Lab at Duke University, he helped build an online program, grounded in behavioral economics, that moved people from knowing what to do to doing it.

At the same time, advisers kept telling him the other half of the story. They wanted to give back, and there was no easy way to do it. So we built one. We find the people who want help, and we give volunteer advisers everything else, so they can do the work they trained for.

“Just because you know the right thing to do doesn’t mean you actually do it. We built a system to bridge that gap.”
Matt Iverson-Comelo, founder and Executive Director

From a pilot to a national program.

  1. 2020

    Founded, then online

We became a California nonprofit in January. Weeks later, the pandemic moved everything online, which turned out to be the right model. A pilot with volunteers from the Financial Planning Association’s San Francisco chapter, funded by the Foundation for Financial Planning, showed us what worked.

  2. 2021

    Open to the whole country

advisersgiveback.org opened nationally in April, and wealth firms started volunteering as partners.

  3. 2023

    Partners join

We began working with financial technology companies and community organizations, and partnered with NAPFA. A feature on Kitces.com brought a wave of new volunteers.

  4. 2024

    More than 2,000 people helped

A pilot with the T. Rowe Price Foundation in Baltimore completed 89 first meetings.

  5. 2025

    Measuring what changes

We launched our public impact dashboard, Wealthspire featured us at its national conference, and the first cohort of our Mentorship Program began.

  6. 2026

    Bay Forward

Our first program for one region launched with San Francisco Public Library, Oakland Public Library and BrightBee in San Jose.
